online purchasing..
Getting cheap deal is every one's dream. Sometimes these can lead to owning fake items or items that won't last long. In India, most electronic items are heavily taxed. For example, price difference between a laptop in US and India can be easily 30k INR. as such many try to get it from friends in US who are coming to India.
In this article, I will mainly focus on purchasing electronic items and books.
ebay.in, indiaplaza.in, rediff, sify, sapnaonline.com, indiatimes.com, firstandsecond.com are some of the online shops in India.
For international online shops, one can opt for ebay.com, alibris.com, DealExtreme.com, Chinavasion.com, UXCell.com, mp4global.com, TinyDeal.com, kaidomain.com, amazon.com.
RULE: If the item you are purchasing is too cheap, it is probably fake or the seller will dupe you.
My review on some the sites (which by no means is exhaustive)
Ebay. in : Simply pathetic !! I rarely find a deal which offers me cheaper price than what is available in the market. In fact, most of the time, the cost is on higher end . However, if you are purchasing a small item, comparing to 'going to market' to buying online may save time and fuel costs. Mostly people purchase items that are around 200-300 rupees only. There are few items like mitashi mp3/dvd player or atmt mp3 player which are branded and can be purchased at ebay.in.
One can also find some good deals for 2nd hand mobiles if you are not in a big city. For example, say in Bhopal, getting a second handO2 PDA would be difficult and possibly costly than a reputed mumbai seller at ebay.in.
Beware !! buy only from sellers that have really high rating (100+) and that rating did came from selling similar items. For example, if the seller got most of his rating from selling Rs 50 necklace and is now selling 10 high end mobiles at low cost, he is probably fake.

Rediff.com, Indiatimes.com: Worthless ! No buyer protection !! And many got duped also. Avoid !!
BOOKS: For Indian books, my first choice is sapnaonline. They offer fast shipping, sometimes I got it within 36 hours !! and low cost. Other good options include cb-india.com, sify.
firstandsecond is also a good option if you want to buy international books and can wait around 30 days. You may compare price with alibris.com or ebay.com as their 'like new' books are very cheap but you will have to pay normally $11 as shipping. Compare the total cost and go for cheaper one. I have purchased 3-4 books from alibris.com. Once I got the book whose condition was worse than the condition they described. I emailed alibris about the problem with pics of book and they refunded me my entire money including shipping costs. The only problem is, it takes long time in shipping.
Unfortunately, you cannot buy from amazon marketplace but only amazon.com

These are well know cheap chinese shops. I haven't purchased from all them but I know about dealextreme.
Dealextreme is great online shop. Their price is simply too good and you can read reviews also.
If you want to buy a portable video player, go for branded mp4 player only like onda, meizu from mp4global.com. Other similar looking items are not worth it.
In India, afaik most electronic items can be imported if their cost is less than 5k (excluding shipping cost), condition is new and it is marked as gift.
There are few exceptions like alkaline batteries. If you buy then from china, you will end up with fine and anti dumping tax. You can, however buy rechargeable Ni mh batteries. In fact, at ebay.com you can get a really good deal for nimh batteries.
